Pendants do more than illuminate a room – they make an unmistakeable style statement. From vintage enamel to gilded birdcages, we pick the brightest and the best.
The pendant has achieved totemic status. No longer a simple light source, it’s the accessory that defines your personal style at a glance, a statement about your aesthetic identity. It’s the light by which you are judged – because there’s a world of design difference between the folk who choose to hang a Tom Dixon and the ones who hanker for a picturesquely crackled vintage factory light.
The pendant is A Good Thing, make no mistake. But it has, in its uber-popularity, spawned a few cliches that are beginning to pall. The typical placement of three identical pendants at the same height, for example. is starting to look a little bit too brochure ready. “Don’t be restricted to keeping lighting to ‘matchy-matchy’,” says the designer Robbie Llewellyn, founder of Bert Frank. “Instead, choose styles that have a common finish, form or detail to tie them into a scheme. While the trio of pendants has been a strong look of late, why not create a real feature with multiple clusters, suspended at different heights?”
